Understanding Credit

Do you understand your credit score?

What is a credit score?
Your credit score is a three-digit number that is unique to you and your personal situation. This number is determined by credit bureaus when they evaluate the information in your credit history and it will affect whether or not you are approved for a personal loan, mortgage, car loan, or credit card as well as determine the interest rate that you would pay on that loan.

What does that mean for you?
A person’s credit score is typically the best predictor how you will repay your loan. There are three national credit bureaus that are traditionally used when a person applies for a loan: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each of these credit bureaus will typically use a formula that was developed by the Fair Isaac Corporation (FICO) to determine your credit score from the information that they have on file. A person with a higher credit score is generally offered a lower interest rate while those with lower scores may still be approved but with a high interest rate.

How is your score figured?
Each of the three credit bureaus may actually assign you a different credit score based on the formula they use based on the specific information that they have access to. However, they all follow a similar method in coming up with that number, so while the number may not be the same they will most likely be similar. Credit scores will range from 300 to 850. A person with no credit history at all will have a score of 0. Staying aware of your scores is important as is understanding how that score is figured to help you improve your credit history and impact what you would pay in interest for financing.

Is your interest rate too high?
Your credit score will change in time as will interest rates that are available. If you have been making your payments on time there is a good chance we may be able to help you get a lower rate now. Please contact one of our finance experts today to learn more.

Have you experienced bankruptcy?
Many people assume that if they filed for bankruptcy there is nothing we can do to help them. That is not always true as we work with many lenders to help provide our customers with the best options available even when other dealerships may not have been able to help. We will work with you to do what we can to help you get approved and start rebuilding your credit.
